Research Pathway

1. Contributed to the research pathway by sharing my idea about recycling bins, which was further researched with my team. I see many issues with our current recycling system with blue bins, the contamination of waste, and Pulau Semakau’s landfill expected to fill up by 2035. Hence, my goal is to investigate different ways I can improve our current Blue Bins.

2. Research on existing AI recycling bins “Bin-e and Bin-e Electro. From these 2 bins, I identify the benefits the bin provided for users in terms of convenience and reliability in promoting recycling the proper way. Got to know about the existence of Bin-e when I was doing a comparison between different types of AI Recycle Bins. 

    a. Bin-e

        i. Using AI to recognise recyclable items

        ii. Auto-separator of recyclable

        iii. Compression of recyclables with a compressor

        iv. Alert system to inform clients when the bin is full

        v. Collect data on the amount of recyclable

    b. Bin-e Electro

        i. Collect electronic waste

        ii. Weight monitoring of recyclable 

        iii. Alert systems like Bin-e

3. Cross-evaluate the benefits and areas of improvement of Bin-e, Bin-e Electro, and BinGo and chart them out, identifying what I want for the improved Blue Bin 

4. Cross-check all background information with the reference sources provided by my group and put comments on areas to improve on. 

5. Currently working on in-depth research on the sensors of the bin

    a. Detect contamination and types of recyclables using Raspberry PI 4 Version B with Google AI vision 

    b. Detect the bin’s capacity with UV sensors to detect the level of recyclables in the bin

    c. Looking into the possibility of using AI learning and converting image to voice/text to voice function     using Raspberry PI 4 Version B


Tech Report and Presentation

1. Presented weekly progress and details of the direction my heading towards for our project with the class.

2. Started on the headers of the report, allocating different parts to my group mates. I focused on the research of the 3 sensors: for contamination, type of recyclable and bin's capacity. 

3. Cross-check all citations with their respective websites which include the dates, author/organisation and the validity of the different sources. Sentence flow and bullet point structure are confirmed and finalised by me.

4. Was assigned to present the 3 sensors in detail with the limitation of our ideal Blue Bin during the presentation. Answered to most of QnA (which is not ideal for team dynamics)

5. Using the software "Onshape" to draft up a CAD drawing on our ideal blue bins with exact dimension.

6. Overall working hand in hand with Kayden, Shajesh and Nefin as our ideal blue bins sources and information crossed paths with one another.
